Year Calculator
Find the gap between two years, or enter complete dates for calendar years, months, remaining days, and decimal years.
How many years are between two years?
Subtract the earlier year from the later year. For example, 2026 − 1904 = 122 years, and 2026 − 1787 = 239 years. This compares year numbers; it does not calculate someone's exact age.
Years between complete dates
Choose two complete dates for a calendar difference. We count whole months from the start date, using the last day of the destination month when the starting day does not exist there, then count remaining days. Twelve whole months make one year.
For example, January 31 to March 1, 2026 is 1 month and 1 day, or 29 elapsed days. February 29, 2024 to February 28, 2025 is 1 calendar year under this month-end rule.
Decimal years and inclusive counting
Decimal years equal elapsed days ÷ 365.2425, the average Gregorian year length. Approximate months equal decimal years × 12. These are estimates rather than counts of complete calendar months.
The default excludes the end date: the same date gives zero elapsed days. Choose “Include end date: Yes” to add one day. Dates are treated as calendar days, so daylight saving time does not change the total.
Frequently asked questions
Can I enter years without a month and day?
Yes. Use “Two years” and enter whole years from 1 to 9999. For an exact date interval, switch to “Two complete dates”.
Is a year difference the same as age?
Subtracting year numbers does not account for whether a birthday has passed. Use the DOB calculator for age on a reference date.
How are leap days handled?
Total days include February 29 when it falls in the interval. For calendar months and years, a missing day is clamped to the last day of the destination month.
